Screens, the number 1 leisure activity of the French in 2020

2021-01-16T12:04:49.514Z

Daily TV time has exploded in France last year, dropping to 3.58 a.m., and even up to 4.40 a.m. in April during the con

It's almost historic: the French spent 3h58 every day in front of their small screen in 2020, or 18 minutes more than in 2019. Decreasing every year for 15 years, this duration goes up for the first time, according to the study annual Médiamétrie which includes linear TV (terrestrial channels or accessible by box and pay) as well as replay.

In detail, it shows peaks that are also historic: 4:29 a.m. daily in March, 4:40 a.m. - a record - in April, 4:25 a.m. in November, and 4:11 a.m. in December.

Figures which demonstrate the correlation between confinements and viewers' greed for their screens.

Streaming platforms, accessible via televisions, computers or smartphones, have also aroused enthusiasm.

Stingy with numbers, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and the newcomer Disney + (since April), whom we have contacted, recognize a “rise” in their number of subscribers in 2020.

We are more sharing on the side of Canal + and its MyCanal platform: the channel announces 30% more subscribers at the end of the year and as many during the first confinement.

Better still, the group reports “record consumption of on-demand programs on MyCanal, up 35% in one year”.

At Arte, we are also delighted with a 50% growth in videos seen on the digital offering (Arte TV, etc.).

52.7% of households subscribe to at least one SVoD service

For his part, Guillaume Jouhet, Director General of OCS, explains that during the first confinement "we recorded a wave of subscriptions which allowed us to find the levels of the time of the end of

Game of Thrones

(

).

It was also noted that consumption was multiplied by three on all media.

"

The NPA Conseil agency, specialized in digital development and which carries out surveys every quarter with a representative sample of 4,080 French people, confirms the trend.

At the end of December 2020, 52.7% of households had subscribed to at least one SVoD service (including 40% on Netflix, 20% on Amazon, 15% on Disney +), against 44.2% a year earlier.

A logical progression according to Philippe Bailly, president of NPA: “The confinements created loyalty: previously, many subscribed to a platform for a renowned series like

Game of Thrones

, then terminated when it was over.

But there they stayed… ”

"The periods of curfew equivalent to a containment of the culture"

And many have even accumulated subscriptions.

According to Maxime Valette, leader of BetaSeries, a community of fans which claims 1.7 million followers, 30 to 40% of them were subscribed to "three platforms in 2020 against one or two in 2019".

“The periods of curfew are equivalent to a containment of the crop.

Suddenly, the only available leisure remains the screens, ”he notes.

Especially since the arrival of Disney +, "which nibbled 15% of the streaming market in eight months", and the enriched content offer have also contributed to increasing the time spent in front of the screens.
