Slow, little and without certainty for the future: the Government's plan to vaccinate against Covid is very far from what was promised

2021-01-16T21:01:49.715Z

There are more gaps in official information than certainties. Millions of vaccines were promised but only 600,000 doses arrived from Russia. And a long list of Argentines are still waiting.

The Government made the announcement.

"Another 5 million doses will arrive in January

.

"

It was not a source close to Casa Rosada.

It was Alberto Fernández.

Later, it turned out that the next 4.7 million doses would arrive in "installments" and from India and Korea.

But no one dares to say when the next shipment will be.

Neither in the Casa Rosada nor in Airlines.

There is no specific and official information on the subject.

The only sure thing is little: the 300,000 doses of the second component of Sputnik V that this Saturday landed in Ezeiza from Moscow to apply to the Health personnel who already gave the first one.

In the words of experts such as the epidemiologist Roberto Debbag or the former Secretary of Health, Adolfo Rubinstein, a barely "testimonial" shipment, which gives the indication that something was mishandled.

There is also silence in the Army and the Ministry of Defense.

Months ago, the head of that portfolio, Agustín Rossi, had announced that the militias would be part of a huge logistics operation to vaccinate Argentines against the Covid.

But none of that happened: he doesn't even know when the moment will come to vaccinate the security forces.

It is also not known how the negotiation with Pfizer continues.

Or what about Moderna's vaccine.

Or when the Astrazeneca ones will be available.

Many questions and few answers about the vaccination plan in Argentina, which is still slow, for now it is "minimal" and which generates more uncertainty than immunity.

Country by country: live the map of vaccination against Covid-19 in the world

Covid-19 continues to worry everyone in 2021. I followed minute by minute the progress of the global vaccination plan.

  • Coronavirus: the first step towards an Argentine vaccine

  • External plan against coronavirus in the United Kingdom: they will vaccinate every day for 24 hours

The World continues to fight against Covid-19.

And all countries began the vaccination process with the goal of putting a stop to the pandemic.

An action that knows no borders and is closely followed by the World Health Organization, Johs Hopkins University, Worldmeters and the British tracker Our World in Data, which uses information from the University of Oxford.

Precisely, Our World in Data is in charge of monitoring the number of people vaccinated in each country and the number of vaccinated per million inhabitants.

After processing all kinds of data, it dumps it into a map to follow the level of vaccination against Covid-19 in the different countries that are already applying the various approved doses.

To date,

200,759 doses

of the COVID-19 vaccine

have been applied

in Argentina and the need to "speed up the scheme" is no longer a secret among the country's health authorities.

The latest report on Friday from the Ministry of Health again shows vertigo in the curve of cases, which are growing incessantly and evenly: there were 12,332 new infections in the last 24 hours and 103 deaths were registered.

The 45 thousand deaths were exceeded, another dramatic border that places Argentina among the 25 countries most affected by the pandemic in the world.

According to the analysis platform

Our World in Data

, which is based on figures from Oxford University, Argentina has a vaccination rate equivalent to 0.44 vaccinated per 100 inhabitants (

0.44% of the population

).

Far from the TOP 10 of the countries with the best punctures: Israel (25.34%), United Arab Emirates (16.84%), Bahrain (6.44%), United Kingdom (5.42%), United States ( 3.77%), Denmark, Slovenia, Italy, Spain and Ireland.

The great powers, taking Israel out, are also advancing slowly, but they seem to have a priori resolved a greater availability of vaccines.

How is Argentina standing in terms of vaccines given in Latin America?

It surpasses Mexico, which although it shows almost 330,000 doses given, that is equivalent to 0.26% of its population.

Also to Chile, which accounts for 0.1% of the vaccinated population.

There is no data for Uruguay.

In this ranking "it is counted as a single dose and may not be equal to the total number of people vaccinated, depending on the specific dose regimen (for example, people receive multiple doses," they clarify on the site.

When zooming in on our numbers, how many doses will Russia ship per week and from when?

How many vaccine quotas are we talking about?

Questions remain unanswered.

As communicated by the Government, the National Vaccination Campaign against COVID-19 aims to protect in the first place the six populations at risk that

total 16 million Argentines

.

According to the stipulated order, the doses will be applied according to this priority: first, the health personnel (394,000 doctors and nurses);

second, adults aged 60 years and over and elderly people residing in nursing homes (7,124,382 elderly adults);

third, adults aged 60 to 69;

fourth, Armed Forces (77,861 military) and security (312,202 troops);

fifth, adults from 18 to 59 years of age from risk groups with underlying diseases (7,107,657 people);

and finally teaching and non-teaching staff (1,057,136).

Thus, this large priority group of 16,073,238 Argentines would be integrated.

But there are potholes.

Explanations are lacking.

And there are no vaccines.

This Friday it was confirmed that ANMAT already has the papers sent from Russia to analyze the approval of the Sputnik V vaccine for those over 60. There should be news this week for that age group.

The two doses of the Russian vaccine.

In parallel, Carla Vizzotti, protagonist of the great official scandal of the week, recalled this Friday that in recent weeks there has been "an increase in cases and a curve that is more accelerated than in June as well as the increase in people in therapy intensive. ”Therefore, he recalled the need to reinforce prevention measures: wear masks, maintain a distance of two meters, prefer outdoor activities and quickly consult the health system before the appearance of symptoms.

But about when the

symptoms

will arrive. vaccines did not comment.

The Argentine state bet on Russia in the first instance and Astrazeneca, in second place.

But Vladimir Putin himself acknowledged having problems meeting global demand.

An illustrative data to ponder is that Russia has also been vaccinating slowly.

According to the records of Our World in Data, it barely managed to vaccinate 0.7% of its population.

Another clear piece of information is that the Health personnel to be vaccinated - the first line in the fight against the coronavirus - have not yet been fully vaccinated.

When will people from the Security Forces be vaccinated?

They were pointed out to be second among the priority groups but there is no date either.

The closest thing to certainty so far is what the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) told

Clarín

.

"The true volume of doses of the vaccines is expected to arrive in March / April. A small amount may arrive sooner or later, but the date is that: between late summer and early autumn," they explained from the agency.

It is about 9 million doses that correspond to the country for being part of the

Covax mechanism

, an alternative system created by PAHO to assist 172 countries in an equitable manner regardless of their economic capacity.

Those vaccines are not necessarily Sputnik V. "We hope that in February there will be 4 or 5 vaccine producers within COVAX," they clarified.

Argentina approved the Sputnik V vaccines, of course, Pfizer and AstraZeneca.

But it only acquired the Russian vaccine while it continues negotiations with Pfizer, Moderna, SinoPharm and advances with the production in the country of the vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZéneca.

What about the Astrazeneca vaccine?

In November, 22 million doses were purchased.

They would arrive in the country in the first half of 2021. But there is no date either.

April is a possibility, but in the form of a transcendent.
