The New York Times today praises Italian red as a "perfect example" of "a good, simple everyday wine".

"Good, simple everyday wines, the kind that can be opened without ceremony or special permission, have a special place in my heart. They are the most expensive bottles for wine lovers," writes the newspaper's winemaker Eric Asimov in the 'Wine School' column.

Asimov recalls that for a long time in the past Montepulciano d'Abruzzo had not enjoyed this good reputation. "In the eighties, when I began to deal with wines, Montepulciano was not particularly inspiring: it was heavy and uninteresting or, towards the end of the century, oaky and sweet. More recently, however, an increasing number of small and serious producers have appeared on the scene and the quality got better and better ".

The winemaker recommended three labels: Cirelli Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2019, Tiberio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2017 and De Fermo Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Concrete 2018.

"Excellent bottles made by producers who work simply and without artifice. They all show the promising side of grape variety and place ".
