In a house fire near Rochester in the northeastern United States, employees of an animal shelter were able to free around 100 cats.
This was reported by several local media.
The animal rescuers were called to the scene of the accident in the middle of the night on Thursday.
There they found the two uninjured residents - who reported 70 animals that should still be in the house.
One room was already on fire.
However, the owners had apparently lost track of their animals: the shelter's employees finally recovered a total of 97 cats.
Many animals have suffered from smoke inhalation and it is unclear whether they will survive.
"Some have breathing problems, scorched whiskers and sensitive paws," said an animal shelter of the online platform 13wham.com.
She does not rule out that more animals are hiding in the house.
The "Lollypop Farm" shelter, which took in the cats, now has a problem with space.
On its website, the organization asks for donations and support from the population - you should consider whether you can take one of the animals into your home.
