Could the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen, which is responsible for the corona pandemic, become harmless in the future and cause a harmless cold?
A researcher from the
United States
believes that
coronaviruses
will pose a threat to very few people in the future.
A corona *
vaccination may
no longer be necessary
in a few years
.
According to the findings, the pathogen
SARS-CoV-2
could cause
colds in the
future
.
Kassel - Could the
coronavirus
one day not
cause
more than a simple
cold
?
At least that is what one scientist from the
USA
believes
.
Jennie Lavine, an infectious disease specialist at Emory University in Atlanta, is convinced that the
SARS-CoV-2
virus
could lose its horror in the future.
The doctor predicts that the current cause of
Covid-19 will
become an endemic pathogen,
i.e.
that it will only appear locally in the future.
Vaccinations could then become unnecessary.
However, since it is still completely unclear how the
corona pandemic
will develop in the coming months, this forecast should be treated with caution.
Will Corona turn into a cold?
SARS-CoV-2 could end similarly to other coronaviruses
As Lavine explains in Science Magazine, she expects
SARS-CoV-2
to behave like the other already known coronaviruses called NL63, 229E, OC43 and HKU1.
These viruses regularly cause epidemics in which
young children
in particular become
ill.
Such illnesses are rarely fatal, however, and are more like a
cold
or
flu
.
In an earlier experimental study with the
coronavirus
229E, however, a new infection was possible after just one year
, so
complete
immunity
is not given even with previous coronaviruses.
The reason is probably the drop in antibody titer.
There are similar signs of current
corona infections
, i.e. the SARS-CoV-2 or
Covid-19
virus
.

Cold and corona: Infections with other corona viruses ensured partial immunity
In
the experimental
study,
however,
a renewed
infection
only led to a shortened virus excretion; the test subjects remained asymptomatic.
Lavine attributes this to a lifelong
partial immunity
that people have acquired after an initial infection.
According to the infectiologist, most people have
antibodies
against the four previously known coronaviruses,
even in old age
.
Lavine therefore strongly assumes that the pathogen
SARS-CoV-2
will also turn
into an endemic pathogen in the next few years and then maybe even only cause a
cold
.
According to the scientist, then probably nobody would have to be
vaccinated
against
corona
any more
, as the partial immunity of the older population groups means that there are hardly any serious illnesses and
deaths
.
