Corona everyday life in Berlin: The great Berlin anger - Column

2021-01-18T23:47:02.419Z

Every few days I call my 83-year-old mother in Steglitz to ask if her vaccination invitation is there. She doesn't look like she's expecting it. She has lived here a lot longer.

I drive more cars, and that is also due to the virus.

I actually like to use public transport because there I can give up my safe distance from real life.

It is a paradox of the crisis, like the popularity of Markus Söder.

But last week my car had to go to the MOT.

My workshop is in Berlin-Weißensee, four stations away from my apartment.

I brought the car there at eight in the morning and took the tram back.

At the bus stop, I ordered a short-haul ticket using the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe app.

The cog turned, after a while the app informed me that the registration time was exceeded.

It gave me exactly one way to react: a surface with the word "accept" on it.

I've been doing this all my life.

I was born in Berlin.

If the corona numbers get worse, we will only be allowed to move 15 kilometers from the city.

No problem.

One could drive from Zehlendorf to Erkner to listen to the noise that the BER flight route planners have disposed of in the east.

15 kilometers in Berlin can be a trip around the world.

You can make it from Mitte to Marzahn, from the city palace to the avenue of cosmonauts.

You can't get out of here anyway.

The Bundestag press office has just informed me that unfortunately I will not be able to accompany Wolfgang Schäuble for a portrait during the election year.

The reason: The President of the Bundestag was accompanied by a ZDF team last year.

Schäuble has been in town too long.

It's a classic Berlin answer.

It doesn't make sense, but it keeps you at a distance.

Heinrich Zille summed it up like this: "If you want to get away from the flower, play with a garbage can!"
