Count to the challenge in the House, the Democratic Party closes to Renzi

2021-01-18T10:20:02.259Z

The premier will present himself at 12 in the Chamber and tomorrow in the Senate and will relaunch his government action. Zingaretti's appeal to 'democrats, liberals, pro-Europeans'. New IV defection to the Chamber. Di Maio: 'We will not leave the Italians in the hands of irresponsible people'. In the evening the leader of Italia viva: 'Let's all write the rules of the game together'. Salvini: 'If Conte has no election numbers or center-right government' (ANSA)

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte will be in the Chamber at 12

.

The finger pointed at Matteo Renzi will not be there.

Instead, there will be a

strong call to responsibility

, to the importance of maintaining strong ties with the EU, to the need to work together for the restart of an Italy that has never been called to so many challenges in such a short time.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, in the feverish hours preceding his first test in the lima classroom for the entire Sunday, what promises to be his most difficult "political" exam.

A speech in which the premier is playing everything for everything, looking with prudent optimism at the vote of the Assembly.

Comparing today's intervention to the one of the duel with Matteo Salvini on 20 August 2019 would not be appropriate.

In spite of that hot Tuesday at Palazzo Madama, Conte will not elaborate a clear "j'accuse" to the leader of Italia Viva.

There is the will of the head of government to speak yes to Parliament but also to the country, trying to underline the "pars constructions" of government action from now to the end of the legislature.

In Conte's strategy, then, the recovery of a part of the Renzian groups is far from excluded, in the name of responsibility and dialogue.

And of that "Ursula majority" which, in Europe, sees the support of Dem, M5S, Leu, Renziani and also of FI.

The head of the executive will almost certainly list the challenges that await the country in 2020. The pandemic, first of all, regarding which at Palazzo Chigi they recall the positive trend of vaccines.

The international ones, secondly, in a year in which Italy will be president of the G20 and co-president of Cop26.

But, above all, the premier will reserve a long and detailed mention for the Recovery Plan.

It is on the Recovery and Resilience Plan that he will concentrate his invitation to restart the country "together".

Recalling some of the pillars of the Italian strategy, from digitization to Green, up to the relaunch of infrastructures.

And, pivoting on the Recovery, the premier will appeal for contributions from parliamentary groups to improve the text.

Putting in place a clear opening to parliamentary work that could attract a few more numbers in the majority.

The speech in the House will be the prequel to Tuesday's challenge in the Senate.

There, obtaining an absolute majority, at the moment, seems almost impossible.

But Palazzo Chigi, for now, it is enough to have one more vote than the opposition, perhaps reaching that threshold "158" which would reduce the numerical importance of the Renzians in perspective.

But for Conte the problems will not vanish after Tuesday.

It will be up to him to open a majority table for an end-of-term program that convinces a group of builders - centrists, liberals, former Renzians - able to consolidate the majority, as has also been requested by the Quirinale in recent days.

A way that, in the strategy of Palazzo Chigi, does not include the resignation of the premier but, at the limit, a coupon to the government team.

Times are tight, but not very tight.

If Conte passes the double test in the Chamber today and Tuesday, he will have just under a month to pay off the majority.

Before, that is, the arrival of the Recovery Plan in the Chamber. But, for the most part, fears are far from appeased.

For the leader of the Lega Salvini, "today the problem for many families is health with the lack of vaccines - he told Rtl 102.5 - and the school with thousands of children in the classroom without security and the tax deadlines that no one has postponed, that everything this is in the background because Mastella and Tabacci look for senators at night is embarrassing. I would never stay like this in the government. If Conte does not have the numbers, there are two ways: either the elections or if Mattarella considered the center-right he has projects and few things to be done quickly to get the country out of the pandemic ".
