Children should stay at home "whenever possible" - that was the announcement by Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and the Prime Minister when the shutdown was extended at the beginning of January.
However, the countries have interpreted this differently, different rules apply everywhere.
Sometimes daycare centers are really only allowed to offer emergency care, for example for children of parents with systemically relevant professions, while elsewhere there is only an urgent appeal to mothers and fathers to take care of their children themselves.
What does this mean for the daycare centers?
What needs are preoccupying educators who have long been forgotten and overburdened during the crisis - while they keep the system running?
Two teachers and a daycare manager told SPIEGEL about their fears and worries.
»› Everything will be fine ‹- even children can no longer hear this phrase«
Benjamin Hielscher, head of the Pusteblume day care center in Frankenberg in
Saxony
»Normally we look after 130 children, at the moment there are 44. Operation is significantly restricted because the rules in Saxony are very clear: As a rule, only mothers and fathers are allowed to bring their children to the daycare centers, at least one of whom is systemically relevant Has a job, such as working as a police officer or nurse.
We really only offer emergency care in the context of a state of emergency.
That still applies until at least February 5th.
