Very few people still know him, but he will soon go down in history: Doug Emhoff will be the United States' first "second gentleman" from Wednesday.
Namely when his wife Kamala Harris is officially sworn in as US Vice President.
As the politician has now revealed, the couple met on a blind date.
Her best friend arranged the meeting, Harris said.
"She said: 'Just trust me'".
However, her friend advised her not to google him.
"I did it anyway," said the Democrat on the Sunday Morning show on CBS News.
Apparently, it didn't hurt the relationship.
A day before the conversation was published, Harris wrote on Instagram that she was "blessed" to have Emhoff by her side during the inauguration.
"It was love at first sight," said the future Vice President.
"It felt like we'd known each other before." The couple married just a year later.
Harris' sister Maya presided over the ceremony.
Emhoff also revealed a secret in the CBS interview: he texted Harris while he was having a few beers with a friend at a Los Angeles Lakers game.
Although Harris, who was born in California, is a big fan of the San Francisco Golden State Warriors, she replied, "Go Lakers!"
"He is totally authentic"
The next day, Emhoff sent a voice message to Harris - for which he said he was later ashamed.
But the 56-year-old was very enthusiastic: »It was just adorable.
Doug is just what he is.
He's totally authentic, ”Harris said in the interview.
For Emhoff it is the second marriage.
Between 1992 and 2008 he was married to the film producer Kerstin Emhoff.
The marriage produced a son and a daughter.
Harris, who was recently named Person of the Year by Time Magazine, has no children.
