(ANSA) - ROME, JANUARY 18 - On average, in 2020 consumer prices recorded a decrease equal to -0.2% (from + 0.6% in 2019).
Net of energy and fresh food (core inflation), prices grow by 0.5% (as in 2019) and net of energy alone by 0.7% (from + 0.6% in 2019).
This was announced by Istat, confirming the preliminary estimate relating to the average for the year.
The 0.2% decrease "is later recorded starting from 1954, that is, since the historical series of the Nic index is available (-0.4% in 1959, -0.1% in 2016)", states the Institute dis statistics.
"Similarly to what happened in 2016 and unlike what happened in 1959 (when it was also due to other product types), the negative annual change in the Nic index - he underlines - is mainly attributable to the trend in energy prices (-8.4% compared to 2019) net of which inflation remains positive and slightly accelerating compared to the previous year ".
