Birth rate in France: in 2020, births at the lowest since 1945

2021-01-19T12:34:44.037Z

Around 740,000 babies were born in France last year, or 13,000 less than in 2019, according to INSEE which unveiled its demographic report.

Covid-19 is not the only cause of the drop in the birth rate in France: the decrease in births has been palpable for six years.

After stalling in 2019 (-0.7%), the fall intensified in 2020. According to INSEE, 740,000 babies were born in the country last year, or 13,000 fewer births than in 2019 (-1.8%) and 79,000 less than in 2014. And France is not the only one in this case.

The number of births depends on both the number of women of reproductive age and their fertility.

The female population aged 20 to 40, the age when women are the most fertile, has decreased overall since the mid-1990s, although their number seems to have leveled off since 2016. Recent trends can therefore be explained more by the decline. of fertility, according to INSEE.

In 2020, the total fertility rate (TFR) stands at 1.84 children per woman (1.86 in 2019).

The ICF has been declining for six years, although the decline had eased in 2019 (-0.01).

The ICF hovered around 2.0 children per woman between 2006 and 2014.

The average age of motherhood is increasing

In addition, the average age of childbearing continues to increase steadily: it reached 30.8 years in 2020, against 29.3 years twenty years earlier.

The most fertile women are those between 25 and 34 years old.

However, the fertility rate of women under 30 has been declining since the 2000s and this decrease has been increasing since 2015. In 2020, 100 women aged 25 to 29 gave birth to 10.6 children, compared to 12.9 in 2010 and 13.4 in 2000. The decline in the fertility rate of women aged 30 to 34 is more recent: 12.5 children per 100 women in 2020 against 13.3 in 2010.
