(ANSA) - ROME, JANUARY 19 - The world committed the record sum of 501.3 billion dollars in 2020 for decarbonisation, beating the previous year by 9% despite the economic crisis caused by the pandemic.

This was stated by an analysis on investment in the energy transition compiled by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) according to which Europe represents the largest share of global investments with 166.2 billion dollars (+ 67%), then there is China at 134 , 8 billion (-12%) and the United States to 85.3 billion (-11%).

In 2020, companies, governments and households, Bnef explains, invested $ 303.5 billion in new renewable energy capacity in 2020, a 2% increase over the previous year, favored by the largest solar projects completed and by a surge in 50 billion dollars for offshore wind.

They also spent $ 139 billion on electric vehicles and related charging infrastructure, a 28% increase representing a new record.

Other areas of investment in the energy transition also showed growth: home installation of energy-efficient heat pumps was $ 50.8 billion (+ 12%), while investments in stationary energy storage technologies such as batteries were $ 3.6 billion, at the level of 2019 despite the drop in unit prices.

Global investment in carbon capture and storage (CCS) tripled to 3 billion and that in hydrogen was 1.5 billion, down 20%, but the second-highest annual figure to date.

Europe's impressive performance, explains Bnef, has been dragged down from a record year for electric vehicle sales and the best year for renewable energy investments since 2012.
