(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 20 - In the year of the epidemic, opposition to organ donation increased in the registration of citizens' will through identity cards issued by municipalities.

In 2020, 33.6% of registrants said no to donation, the highest percentage ever (they were 32.5% in 2019).

The denial is recorded above all by the over 60s, while the propensity to donate is higher among young adults (between 30-40 years old the consent is 75%).

It is women who are more generous, with an opposition steady at 29.8% against 32.2% of men.

This was highlighted by the 2020 Report of the National Transplant Center Cnt.

According to the NTC, one of the reasons for the growth of opposition is that there continues to be little information on this front to citizens.

In general, moreover, in 2020 the registrations of the will - for or against - to donate globally decreased: the declarations issued to municipalities totaled 1,960,705 while the previous year had been over 2.4 million.

In total, almost 9 million declarations have been submitted in the Transplant Information System to date, of which over 6.5 million consents.

The closure of the registry services during the first lockdown and the government's decision to extend the expiration of the old identity documents were weighing in this decline.
