Willie Wonka, one of the most famous characters created by British children's author Roald Dahl in the book "Charlie in the Chocolate Kingdom", will be at the center of a new prequel that will deal with the early period of his life and explain how he became the "candy king".
The film, to be called "Wonka", has been in development for the past five years and the actors previously mentioned as candidates for the lead role include Ryan Gosling, Donald Glover and Ezra Miller.
Right now, Hollywood website Collider reports, Warner Studios is debating between young superstars Tom Holland ("Spider-Man") and Timothy Shalama ("Call Me by Your Name").
To date, two cinematic versions of the book have been produced.
First released in 1971, he played the wonderful comedian Willy Wonka Gene Wilder.
In the second version, released in 2005 (and directed by Tim Burton), he played Wonka Johnny Depp (in a bizarre performance that he claims was based on eccentric pop star Michael Jackson).
"Wonka" will be directed by Paul King, who has gained considerable credit among many film buffs thanks to two "Paddington" films (which he wrote and directed).
The script, which Simon Rich ("American Sour") trusts, is expected to draw inspiration from Dale's classic book.
Apart from "Wonka", which is scheduled to be released in 2023, two animated series based on "Charlie and the Chocolate Kingdom" are currently being produced for Netflix - the first one develops and expands the world of the book, while the second one is entirely focused on Umpa Lumpa - And weirdos working in Wonka's factory.
Both series are led by New Zealand director Taika Waiti ("JoJo Rabbit").
