In recent weeks, we have witnessed an unprecedented operation in the history of public health in Israel.

More than two million people in Israel have already received the first dose of the corona vaccine in Israel, and very soon, after the second dose is also received, we can begin to imagine the light at the end of the tunnel and imagine what life we knew a little over a year ago will look like again.

Along with the great excitement, quite a few vaccinators report side effects - local and systemic - of the vaccine.

Should they cause concern?

No.

What can be done to reduce them?

Some things.

First, it should be understood that the purpose of all vaccines, including the corona vaccine, is to stimulate the immune system and produce immune memory.

Mild side effects occur after giving all routine vaccines, including killed vaccines and attenuated life, such as measles or mumps, but even in the case of Pfizer's corona vaccine, which works in a slightly different way, the immune system goes into action.

Chances are high that your hand will hurt, but it will pass in a day or two.

Once the immune system is awakened, side effects can occur, and in the case of the corona vaccine, their frequency is relatively high.

What is seen in the field is consistent with the findings of the third phase of Pfizer's study, in which 40,000 people participated: Many vaccinators (up to 40%) suffer from fever, chills and muscle aches, especially after receiving the second dose of the vaccine.

Surprisingly, young vaccinators suffer more from these side effects than older vaccinators.

The side effects of the vaccine are divided into two groups: local effects, which include swelling, redness and sensitivity to touch in the shoulder area - where the injection is given.

And systemic effects: fever, weakness, headache, muscle aches.

In the vast majority of cases, the symptoms pass within 24-48 hours.

We see all this more than you, as mentioned, after receiving the second dose of the vaccine.

Along with these two groups there are also rare, and more worrying side effects such as anaphylaxis - a severe allergy attack.

Side effects are more common in young vaccinators.

The reality on the ground is consistent with the results of the clinical trial: both for me and for many members of the medical staff, side effects appeared after receiving the second dose of vaccine.

Side Effects?

That's a good sign

It may not comfort those who lie at home with fever and pain, but most of the side effects are an indication that the immune system, which has already started producing antibodies after the first encounter with the corona virus components, attacks it harder when you receive the second dose of the vaccine.

This mechanism is familiar to us from other vaccines such as tetanus, an old and safe vaccine.

Also in his case there are more local side effects the more vaccine doses you get.

What medications are allowed to be taken?

The local symptoms - fever and redness in the area giving the injection - can be treated by placing a cold compress on the shoulder area and activating the arm.

Systemic effects can be treated with painkillers.

The heat and pain will disappear as they come even if nothing is done, however most of us would of course like to relieve ourselves.

For this purpose, you can use all the medications for lowering fever and painkillers that are available at home, such as ibuprofen (Nurofen for example), acetaminophen (paracetamol for example) or diphiron (Optalgin).

These are also the recommendations of the CDC (American Center for Disease Control and Prevention).

Anaphylaxis - the severe allergic reaction - will appear near the time of vaccination (within a few minutes) and will be treated by the local medical staff.

It is important to know that this is not a unique phenomenon for the corona vaccine.

There are those whose bodies respond in this way to other vaccines as well.

And it is also important to know the statistics: this is a very rare phenomenon.

All known painkillers and antipyretics are safe to use to relieve the side effects of the corona vaccine.

At the beginning of the plague, several articles were published regarding the use of such or other drugs in Corona patients, which later turned out to be incorrect.

One hypothesis referred to ibuprofen (the active ingredient in drugs like norepinephrine and Advil for example).

Because the corona virus binds to healthy cells through a receptor that ibuprofen increases, they feared that ibuprofen consumption would increase the chance of developing severe coronary heart disease.

However, no evidence was found to support this hypothesis, and it was soon disproved.

In recent months, several articles have been published that contradict these hypotheses, including a study I conducted myself on corona patients who were hospitalized in Israel, received ibuprofen and their course of the disease was not more difficult.

Today we treat corona patients with all painkillers, and painkillers and antipyretics such as ibuprofen are defined as the first line of treatment for the side effects of the vaccine.

It is important to know that there is no treatment in the world that does not have side effects, and the more it is distributed among more people the more likely it is to be exposed to side effects.

It is always important to ask ourselves what is the chance of developing the severe side effect if not vaccinated and understand that in the case of vaccines the benefit outweighs the risk.

What is important is to preserve immunity in the general population and this is done through the general public vaccination.
