New Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, is famous for Converse sneakers and pearls.
Thus hundreds of thousands of women have pledged to wear one or both accessories in her honor on Inauguration Day when Harris is crowned the first female vice president in US history.
The New York Times reveals that in December, retired former Navy chief Hope Aloaye, 46, from Florida, started a Facebook group called 'Wear Pearls on Jan 20 2021', 'Wear pearls on January 20, 2021'. which now has 430,000 members.
The idea was to celebrate Harris, who on important occasions has always chosen to wear this jewel: she did it when she graduated from Howard University, when she was sworn in in Congress, in the TV debate against outgoing vice president Mike Pence, when he received the covid vaccine and will probably wear them again today when he is sworn in as Joe Biden's deputy.
"They represent female solidarity," explained fashion historian Darnell-Jamal Lisby.
