(ANSA) - ROME, JANUARY 21 - The Ugandan opposition leader, Bobi Wine, has filed a complaint with the UN for arbitrary detention.

Wine is living de facto under house arrest on Friday, after disputing the re-election of President Yoweri Museveni for the sixth consecutive term.

"Nigerian human rights lawyer Femi Falana filed this complaint on my behalf to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Arrests. We are contesting my continued illegal imprisonment by the Ugandan police and army," Wine said in a quoted tweet. by AlJazeera.

The Kampala residence of Bobi Wine, a former singer whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, is surrounded by a cordon of soldiers and police officers.

76-year-old Museveni was re-elected with 59 percent of the vote, while 38-year-old Wine got about 35 percent of the vote.

Wine spoke of "widespread fraud" during the vote on January 14, marked by the closure of the Internet and preceded by protests that cost the lives of dozens of people.

Human rightswatch (HRW) said the elections were characterized by violence and human rights abuses.

"A democratic playing field for free and fair elections was worryingly absent during these elections," said Oryem Nyeko, HRW researcher for Africa quoted by AlJazeera.

"Instead of restricting freedom of expression, movement and assembly, the Ugandan government should take concrete measures with the aim of improving respect for human rights for all and removing all remaining restrictions," he added.
