With flashing lights and siren: Cologne police officers apparently wanted to say goodbye to a colleague that will be remembered - and are now in trouble with their employer.

In Cologne, there are internal investigations against numerous police officers following an unauthorized convoy.

The column of 17 police motorcycles, a special vehicle of the Cologne special forces and a water cannon drove from Brühl to the district of Euskirchen on Wednesday morning "using special rights and rights of way," the police said.

The reason for the trip was therefore that a long-standing colleague is retiring.

The head of a day care center in Euskirchen called the police to find out the reason for the use of blue light and siren.

Police President Uwe Jacob initiated internal investigations and informed the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of the Interior about the incident.

According to official information, the official and criminal investigations are directed against the planners and participants in the campaign.

Among other things, they are accused of improper use of business vehicles.

Jacob said he did "understand that popular employees are dignified farewell after 40 years of service."

"However, such actions can have consequences for each individual, but also for the authorities."

Jacobs apologized to the Euskirchen district administrator Markus Ramers (SPD) for the incident.

The Kita management also had to apologize "and put the cards on the table."
