Divers of the Italian Coast Guard have discovered a giant whale carcass in the Gulf of Naples off Sorrento.

The coast guard announced on Wednesday that it was "presumably one of the largest" dead whales ever found in the Mediterranean.

The divers had therefore already discovered the huge mammal on Sunday.

It is said to be a fin whale a good 23 meters long.

According to the coast guard, the divers had been called to an area off the coast of the southern Italian tourist stronghold after another, smaller whale was sighted there.

This animal has meanwhile disappeared again in the sea, it said.

According to the information, the dead whale has now been transported from Sorrento to the port of Naples.

There the carcass will be examined by marine biologists and other experts for the cause of death.
