Italian police arrested dozens of suspects during an anti-Mafia operation in several parts of Italy.
The suspects include suspected 'Ndrangheta bosses from Calabria as well as entrepreneurs, officials and politicians.
As reported by the Italian news agency ADN Kronos, 13 people were arrested and 35 others placed under house arrest.
Among other things, they are accused of tax evasion through false bills, criminal conspiracies and the illegal acquisition of public contracts.
Among other things, it should be about the area of corona protective equipment such as masks and gloves.
Among the suspects are former MP and MEP Lorenzo Cesa and another politician from the Christian Democratic UDC.
They are suspected of collaborating with the 'Ndrangheta.
After a search, Cesa denied all allegations.
However, he resigned from his party post, as the Ansa agency wrote.
"Structurally complex and highly organized"
The group was "structurally complex and highly organized," said the anti-mafia investigators from the DDA in the Calabrian regional capital Catanzaro.
Central suspects have been identified in Crotone, where the 'Ndrangheta is at home.
In connection with the allegation of various mafia crimes and support of the organization, the investigators confiscated real estate, cars and other assets in the high millions.
The operation was led by the well-known anti-Mafia prosecutor Nicola Gratteri.
Only about a week ago, on January 13th, one of the largest Mafia lawsuits of the past decades began in Calabria.
The 'Ndrangheta is considered Italy's most powerful mafia organization.
Murders, drug trafficking, extortion, money laundering and illegal waste disposal are among the things they are responsible for.
