Great art, film and music events such as Art Basel, Glastonbury and Cannes, reeling for another year due to the covid-19 crisis

The hope of vaccines has been insufficient to keep the dates of great cultural events of art, cinema and music, so much awaited in a year of Zoom and nostalgia for the crowd.

For the moment, the Glastonbury music festival has canceled its next edition, the Art Basel contemporary art fair is postponed to September and the Cannes international film festival to June.

  • A critical year for theaters that comes with powerful premieres

  • A bad omen for festivals: Glastonbury cancels next edition

  • The uncertain return of mass concerts in 2021

The first received 200,000 viewers every year in the United Kingdom, the country most affected by the pandemic in Europe, with more than 93,000 deaths confirmed by covid-19.

Musicians like Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney or Kendrick Lamar were left without performing in the last edition, which should have celebrated half a century in 2020.

Tickets for 2021 carry over to 2022, the festival coordinators announced on Twitter.

Art Basel joined the 2020 crowd of cancellations, but the organization has decided to resist and postpone the June 2021 date, its usual month, to September.

Specifically, it is expected for the 23 to 26 in Messe Basel (Switzerland).

In a statement he announced the obvious reasons: "Due to the continuing impact of the global pandemic and travel restrictions around the world."

The Cannes Festival has also decided to push back its dates, set in May, to July.

According to

Variety

magazine

, organizers will announce the new dates for the 2021 edition this month, after it was suspended last year after a series of postponements.

The managers have confirmed in a note their decision to host a physical event in 2021, after the cancellation of Cannes in 2020 was a serious blow to the international premiere circuit.

These decisions are in addition to the one already announced by the Berlinale, which has been divided into two: from March 1 to 5,

the industrial part

will be given

online

and an international jury will see the films in the competition and announce the winners.

Later, in summer, they will be screened to the public.

In other cases, uncertainty persists, as with Coachella.

According to Bloomberg, the coordinators of the music festival have discussed the dates, among which they consider a possible change from April to October.

The mayor of Palm Springs - where it takes place - said the city does not plan to hold any events in the spring.

And yet Coachella is still scheduled for April.

Films whose release is delayed

'Peter Rabbit 2': June 11

'Cinderella': July 16

'No time to die': October 8

'Last night in Soho': October 22

'Ghostbusters: Beyond': November 11

'Morbius': January 21, 2022

'Uncharted': February 11, 2022
