2021-01-22T10:49:28.333Z

Arrived from the west this night, the Hortense storm will cross the country on its southern half this Friday, causing gusts and rains.

South-West, Massif Central, Alps, Mediterranean basin and Corsica… Hortense will spare no sector of the south of France this Friday.

The storm will manifest itself in strong winds that can reach up to 120 km / h and will be accompanied by rain.

A risk of flooding is possibly to be expected.

Hortense arrived this Friday morning in Aquitaine.

The Landes and the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in time placed on orange vigilance for strong winds, were finally released from the alert.

Just like the Gironde.

Further east, on the other hand, Corsica remains on orange alert.

In detail, Haute-Corse is for thunderstorms in the afternoon and strong winds and in southern Corsica there is a risk of waves-submersion.

After the two strong gales that hit part of the country on Wednesday and Thursday, including further north, Hortense is extending the bad weather conditions over the southern half of the country on Friday.

It will generate strong winds but will also bring rains which, by accumulation on saturated soils, could cause some flooding.

Snow expected in the Northern Alps

A very strong westerly wind must accompany Hortense, which will blow up to 120 to 130 km / h on the Aquitaine coast.

Gusts of up to 100 km / h inland are to be expected in the departments in orange vigilance, a little less in the neighboring departments in yellow vigilance.

This overcast weather with sometimes marked rains quickly gained the Center and Occitanie then Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in the afternoon, with a slightly less strong wind but remaining sustained.

The rain-snow limit, from 1,500 to 1,800 m in the morning, drops to 1,000 to 1,200 m over the Pyrenees and the Massif Central, 1,200 to 1,400 m over the Northern Alps where we expect a good layer of fresh snow in the evening.

Return of the sun further north of the country

It rains more heavily in Corsica, with sometimes strong thunderstorms, which can be accompanied by hail, heavy rains, and gusts of the order of 80 to 100, or even 120 km / h.

Around the Gulf of Lion, the tramontana also blows around 100 km / h in gusts, it does not prevent a good rainy passage around midday.

In contrast to Brittany and Pays de Loire on the Belgian border, the sun is back in a calmer and a little cooler atmosphere, except for a few coastal showers in the afternoon.

Last night, in Corsica, the wind strengthened significantly to reach 100 to 110 km / h Bastia, 130 to 140 km / h in Balagne and Solenzara, 160 or even occasionally 180 km / h on Cap Corse.
