The results of the vaccination campaign are just around the corner

The vaccination campaign in Israel is continuing at a satisfactory pace, and we expect to begin to see its results in the coming days.

But at the same time, there is growing concern about the spread of new variants in the world.

The vaccination campaign against Corona in Israel began about a month ago, and as part of it, about 2.7 million doses have been given so far, including more than 600,000 people who were also vaccinated in the second dose.

This is the stage where we are supposed to start to see a decrease in morbidity in the vaccinated populations.

However, the widespread wave of morbidity that is sweeping most of the countries of the world as well as Israel and the strict quarantine measures being taken still make it difficult to see the expected effect of the vaccine.

According to the findings of the third phase of the clinical trial of Pfizer, the efficacy of the first dose was about 52 percent, and the maximum efficacy of 95 percent came only about a week after the administration of the second dose, which the first vaccinated in Israel began receiving nearly two weeks ago.

Eyes all over the world are looking at the results of the Israeli vaccination campaign.

Will this mutation cause re-infections in the corona?

This week, a small study was published at Sheba Hospital in Tel Hashomer, and examined 102 vaccinated people about a week after receiving the second dose.

All but two had high levels of antibodies to the virus.

One of the two who did not develop antibodies was immunosuppressed, so this is not very surprising.

The study is small and unrepresentative, but encouraging.

Preliminary findings from another study published this week showed a decrease in infection about two weeks after the first dose was given.

The full study is expected to be published soon.

Despite the cautious optimism, it is important to remain careful - even if you have already been vaccinated.

To date, about 54 million vaccine doses have been given worldwide, most of them by Pfizer and Moderna.

The United States continues to lead in the total number of vaccines, with about 17 million doses - just over half of the doses it has accumulated so far, followed by China (about 15 million doses) followed by all EU countries along with about 7 million doses in total.

Pfizer announced this week a delay in sending more vaccines to EU countries, but given the low vaccination rate they are not expected to have a real impact on them.

In the United Kingdom, about 5 million vaccine doses have been given so far, and the opening five are stamped by Israel, as stated with 2.7 million doses.

When examining the percentage of the population that has been vaccinated, Israel is ranked well above all other countries, after it has already started vaccinating about a quarter of its population.

Considering that a third of the country's residents are too young to be vaccinated, the rate of immunization is even more encouraging.

Anthony Pauchi, one of the leaders of the Corona's fight team in the United States, signaled this week to the companies Astraznica and Johnson & Johnson that it will take a few more weeks to approve additional vaccines.

Despite the fine manufacturing supplies of Pfizer and Moderna and of Chinese vaccine manufacturers, the world needs far more vaccines.

The Johnson & Johnson company has announced that it will publish today the interim results of the third phase of the clinical trials in the vaccine it is developing.

Caution: Mutations

So far the good news.

The issue of new viruses continues to keep sleep out of the eyes of many.

The global efforts to suppress the spread of the new variants - corona viruses that have accumulated a large number of changes (mutations) that may change their function - are somewhat reminiscent of the Dutch boy who tried to plug a hole in the dam with his finger.

A little more, and we will begin to see the effects of the vaccine in Israel.

It is not clear at this time how effective the existing vaccines are against the new viruses.

Recently, several studies have been published that have examined whether the virus manages to evade antibodies from people who have recovered from the disease.

Worryingly, one recently published study, before being peer-reviewed, found that the South African virus manages to some extent to escape the antibodies in laboratory cultures.

The finding raises concerns that people who have already recovered from the disease may be infected with it again, this time in the new variant, and perhaps even the vaccine will be less effective against it.

Of course, neutralizing the virus under laboratory conditions is just one measure: immune memory and the immune response in the animal body have additional layers that may continue to function properly even against this virus, so the concerns may very well be exaggerated.

Another study, also published before a peer-reviewed study, showed that antibodies developed in people who received the vaccine were slightly more difficult to neutralize the British and South African viruses, compared to the original corona virus.

In contrast, a study published this week by Pfizer, also not yet peer-reviewed, showed that antibodies formed in the blood of vaccinated people successfully detect and neutralize the British virus, suggesting that the vaccine is still effective against it.

Is it in the same class?

And what about the South African virus?

We'll find out soon.

There is no doubt that this plague teaches us an important lesson in rejecting gratifications.
