"Morbius", "Fast & Furious 9" ... the heavyweights of American cinema postpone their releases

Like the new James Bond, once again postponed to October, most of the major American films scheduled for the spring are preparing to repo

A French distributor laughs yellow.

"I'm going to take a sleeping pill, wake me up in a few months!"

», Balances the professional of the 7th art who has in his catalog several American films of which he postpones the releases for almost a year.

A situation that repeats itself over the months.

Last example "Die can wait", the last James Bond.

The Ultimate 007 starring Daniel Craig, which was originally scheduled for release in April 2020, has been delayed several times since.

The specialized American press sensed this new gap for two weeks: given the evolutions of the pandemic, cinemas in the United States and around the world do not seem close to reopening their doors to the public.

However, we should not focus on the James Bond: the movement is general, and all the studios which had stalled or failed the releases of their blockbusters in the spring, are considering new postponements in the fall ... to better.

Even later.

“Morbius” with Jared Leto, a Marvel superhero film to which Sony Pictures holds the rights, scheduled for March 19, has been planned for January 21, 2022 for a few hours!

Ditto for the musical “Cinderella”, originally scheduled for February 5 or the sequel to “Pierre Lapin”, postponed since last summer, repositioned to June and July… for now.

"If only one certainty can arise from this pandemic, it is that Hollywood will replay the song of postponements in the next six months", lamented a colleague of the American specialist magazine "Variety" a few days ago.

Thus, Universal, the studio that distributes "Die can wait", will probably push back another huge choice piece, "Fast & Furious 9" with Vin Diesel, for the moment scheduled for May 26, in the fall, which he has already done with "The Adams Family 2", now set for October 27.

At Paramount, the releases of "Without a noise 2" or "Maverick" - the sequel to "Top Gun" with Tom Cruise - have been cautiously stopped on April 21 and July 2 (14 in France) respectively.

But the American press is also questioning their case.

Warner Bros and Disney have their platforms

Two other studios, Warner Bros and Disney, if they are under the same constraints due to the pandemic, do not reason in the same way because they have home streaming platforms to broadcast their films there, as Warner did. by mixing a small theatrical release and a HBO Max broadcast of “Wonder Woman 84” in December in the USA.

It is rumored that Disney would be willing to do the same for their Marvel production "Black Widow" with Scarlett Johansson.

For now scheduled for May 5 in theaters, the film could switch directly to Disney +, as was the case for "Soul" in December.

Ditto for "Nomadland", Oscar favorite which will be released on February 19 in a small circuit of American theaters and on the Hulu platform, owned by Disney.

This is not the ideal solution, however: American experts in the economics of cinema estimate the loss of income for "Wonder Woman 84" at $ 100 million.

If the film won the Warner group a few subscriptions on HBO Max, that does not make up for this deficit.

In the meantime, Disney is keeping "Free Guy" with Ryan Reynolds on May 19 and "Cruella" with Emma Stone on the 26th, and Warner is keeping "Godzilla vs Kong" on March 17 or "Suicide Squad" on August 4 ... while considering, if the pandemic worsens, to reset these big machines in the fall or to slide some of them onto their platforms.

We are therefore heading, slowly but surely, towards a spring, if not a summer, without Hollywood heavyweights.

This obviously has consequences for France.

American studios favoring world releases, they will also be absent from our cinemas no doubt until the fall, even if our theaters reopen before the summer.

With one exception: that of films that will be released on American platforms only.

Thus “Wonder Woman 84” should be programmed in France when the cinemas reopen.

In any case, the shifts of American blockbusters will offer a new avenue for French films.
