(ANSA) - GENOA, JANUARY 24 - Msc Grandiosa sails tonight from Genoa with the first cruise of 2021, marking the restart of the sector after the forced stop for the Covid emergency in the Christmas period.

The flagship of the MSC cruises fleet, which had already been the first ship in the world to leave, last August 16, after the months of the first lockdown, as a note from the group recalls, returns to offer weekly cruises in the Mediterranean.

"We are aware that the eyes of the world - in particular those of the tourism sector, still stopped due to the pandemic - continue to be focused on Italy. A country that was the first to restart a sector such as the cruise sector, which is worth 14 billion nationally euro and generates employment for 120,000 people, thus representing an important driving force for other sectors that are currently still inactive "explains Leonardo Massa, managing director of MscCrociere.

Swab for all guests before boarding and mid-week and weekly for the crew, social distances, mask in public areas, smart bracelet to track the closest contacts during the cruise, go ashore only with protected excursions, are the points of the security protocol.

"The protocol has already allowed us, between August and December 2020 - underlines Massa - to carry over 30,000 people in complete safety, and is now used as a model to support the possible restart of the cruise sector together with other hospitality sectors in other countries of the world. ".
