Londoners disagree: is the dress blue and black or white and gold?

Wow, we now have crazy flashbacks to February 2015, when an ugly dress in blue and black (sorry white and gold, not actually blue and black ... or white and gold ?!) caused hysteria on the net with millions of surfers arguing about her true color and not believing others see her differently.

Here we are in 2021 and nothing seems to have changed, with a new dress creating an online debate again because some see it in one color and others in another color.

This time a majority is registered for a specific color, but is the majority right?

Channel 7 Australian news presenter Kendall Gilding shared a photo of herself just before the broadcast wearing a Ted Baker dress and described it as "white and up-to-date".

The 26-year-old waitress wrote next to the photo: "Wednesday in white! I live for this dress - the smooth lines, the lapel collar, the divine fabric, the most up-to-date white!".

There were many on the network who did not understand what she was talking about and responded to the picture: "You are wrong, the dress is blue", one reporter and another added: "Completely blue, but stunning".

Another person wrote: "The dress looks blue because it is blue. Kendall seems a bit confused today."

Decide for yourself: the dress is blue or white?

  • Blue, obviously

  • brick.

    The picture deceives us

Kendall noticed the flood of reactions she received to the photo and wrote, "You are not the first to tell me this! I think it looks like this because of the low lighting in which the photo was taken."

To prove the white dress she later shared a picture of herself directly from the studio and wrote: "For anyone discussing whether my dress is white or blue, here is a picture from the news studio."

Why is this happening?

How does it make sense that in the first picture the dress looks blue (for most of us) while in the second picture it is completely white?

This is an optical illusion created due to the quality of the image or the background colors in it.

Objects reflect light at certain wavelengths and the human brain determines the color of the object by its reflected light. This perception can get out of balance by the color of the objects next to it.

In the case of Kendall's dress, our perception of the color of the dress was influenced by the blue wall behind it.

Then she shared a picture of herself in a red dress and wrote: "You can not be confused with the color of my dress today"
