VIDEO. Puncture, brakes, chain: how to easily do these three repairs yourself on your bike

2021-01-24T09:25:29.501Z

“Biclou”, the Parisian bike series. Faced with the boom in cycling, the deadlines for having your bike repaired in a store have increased.

BICLOU, EPISODE 34 - Many cyclists have experienced it.

The traditional flat tire, inevitable when you cycle regularly, always happens ... at the wrong time!

"Even if it's not dramatic, it's annoying and I have the impression that it always happens to me at 11 o'clock in the evening" says Marianne, retired, smiling on the cycle paths.

So we wanted to show you how to fix three of the most common breakdowns: a flat tire, loose brakes and a damaged chain.

All thanks to the volunteers of the La Cyclofficine self-repair workshop in Ivry (94)

Put a patch on a punctured inner tube

To repair a punctured inner tube, all you need is a small patch LP / Olivier Arandel

First step disassemble your tire.

"Nothing could be simpler, just loosen the bolts with an adjustable wrench" explains Christèle, mechanic in charge of the Cyclofficine workshop.

Then listen carefully.

To identify the hole, you need to inflate the inner tube and listen carefully to where the air leak is coming from.

“Then all you have to do is stick a patch on the hole and reassemble the tire,” explains Christèle.

"By doing this, rather than buying an inner tube, you save a few euros, but above all you fight against the waste of these polluting products" concluded our chief engineer.

Christèle's advice

: buy a repair kit (€ 4.30) to slip into her bag.

Tighten the brakes

If your brakes make noise when you try to apply them, it means they may be incorrectly adjusted / LP / Claire Duhamel

If, like us, your brakes make noise when you try to apply them, it means that they may be incorrectly adjusted.

“You don't have to brake to the end for them to work,” explains Christèle.

Solution?

Tighten the cable by about 1 cm at the level of the pad.

Christèle's advice

: learn this repair if you are an electric bike user, "because because of the higher speed, the brakes wear out faster".

Maintain your chain

Maintenance of a bicycle chain / LP / Olivier Arandel

Last step in our DIY learning, the chain.

Ours derails a little too often, due to lack of maintenance.

"First of all, you have to check that it is properly adjusted with a chain tester."

The end of the tester must not be able to enter the link, otherwise it must be tightened.

Then, Christèle advises us to lubricate the chain and the pinions with classic DIY oil.

Christèle's advice (for the pros)

: "If you have an old, unusable bicycle chain, you can use it to make a saddle lock".

To do this, you must have a chain tool which makes it possible to shorten a chain into as many links.
