(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 25 JAN - On 25 January 2016 at 7.41 pm Giulio Regeni sent his last text message from Egypt.

Nothing more was heard of him until February 3, when the tortured body was found on a road between Cairo and Alexandria.

Five years after that message, the truth about the assassination of the Friulian researcher is still far away, despite the work of the Italian judiciary and the commitment of the government.

Today the case will be discussed in the EU Foreign Council, the foreign minister Luigi Di Maio will speak about it via videoconference.

European ministers could decide to take other steps.

"The Regeni affair concerns everyone, not just Italy", wrote Piero Fassino, President of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chamber, to his EU counterparts, asking "to take every parliamentary initiative, on a political and diplomatic level, both bilateral and multilateral", a "commitment to international law and respect for human rights".

Meanwhile, the community of Fiumicello, the town where the researcher grew up, is preparing to remember Giulio.

This year the events will take place in streaming on the 'La Repubblica' website and on the Facebook pages 'Il comune informa - Fiumicello VillaVicentina', 'Giulio are us' and 'Truth for Giulio Regeni'.

On the investigation front, days ago the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office filed the request for indictment for the Egyptian general Tariq Sabir and for three other members of the secret services of the Cairo regime, Athar Kamel Mohamed Ibrahim, Uhsam Helmi, Magdi Ibrahim Abdelal Sharif.

The goal of the magistraticapitolini is to bring to trial the four 007s who took Giulio in January 2016, transferred him to a villa in Cairo where for days he was brutally tortured and then killed.

A process that Egypt considers groundless and based on "illogical conclusions".
