Alphabet, the parent company of Google, closes the Loon project, that of balloons which aimed to provide the Internet in the most disadvantaged areas with little connectivity.

"Unfortunately, despite the team's groundbreaking technical achievements over the past 9 years, the road to commercial profitability has proved to be much longer and riskier than hoped for," the company explained in a blog post.

Loon was employed to deliver internet to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria in 2017 and after a major earthquake in Peru. Loon's balloons are powered by solar panels and use artificial intelligence systems that allow you to ride high-altitude winds. Created with an independent company within Alphabet in 2018, the Loon venture was another bet for the tech giant, which also includes the Waymo self-driving car project and the delivery of the Wing drone.
