The population of Mexico evolves over time.
The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) presented this Monday the results of the National Population and Housing Census carried out in 2020, a few weeks before the health contingency due to covid-19 began in the country.
This is one of the most important statistical exercises to fully understand the structure and characteristics of the population of a country and thus design projects aimed at people's well-being.
"It is clearly seen in middle age that we are aging over time," said Julio Santaella, president of INEGI.
According to census data, half of the population is 29 years old or younger, when in 2010 it was 26 years old and in 2000 it was 22 years old.
"With the passage of time there are older people in the country, although it cannot be said that we are a country of old people," acknowledged Santaella.
One of the peculiarities of this census is that the population of black and Afro-descendant origins was asked for the first time, a milestone for minorities that have historically suffered from discrimination in the country.
Additionally, the survey period in Mexican households was carried out from March 2 to 29, which was an additional challenge due to COVID-19 infections.
According to the agency, of the more than 200,000 pollsters, only 52 were infected and no deaths were recorded from the pandemic.
