The fact that the British are a people who love to party is not only shown by bachelor parties on Hamburg's Reeperbahn or the Mallorcan Magaluf, which is popular with many.

An international study also confirms: The English and Scots were the most heavily drunk in 2019.

With 33.8 times in one year, the Scots were, according to the Global Drug Survey, on average slightly ahead of the British (33.7).

For the survey published on Monday, over 90,000 people in more than 25 countries were interviewed at the end of 2019.

In the survey, drunkenness was defined as follows: so much alcohol was drunk that physical and mental abilities were massively impaired - including a sense of balance or language.

According to the analysis, people in Australia were the third most frequently heavily drunk with an average of just under 32 alcoholic escapades, followed by Scandinavians in Denmark (31.3) and Finland (30.4).

In Germany, the respondents were heavily drunk only 15 times on average.

Corona influences drinking behavior

The research team of the Global Drug Survey around the British psychiatrist Adam Winstock did not actually want to publish the data for 2020 until the beginning of 2021, but due to the changed world situation due to the corona pandemic, they have already published the most important findings of a survey from May and June 2020 .

This shows that people use alcohol significantly more frequently than in the time before the Corona: 43 percent of the participants said they drink more than before the pandemic.

The main reason for the increased consumption indicated that the majority of those surveyed simply had more time for it (42 percent) and were more often bored (41 percent).

A fifth of the participants also justified it by feeling lonely or more depressed.

38 percent of respondents said that increased alcohol consumption had a negative impact on their physical well-being, and that drinking had worsened mental health for 26 percent.

42 percent also said they had been drinking alcohol alone more often since the pandemic.

According to the study, cannabis consumption also increased during Corona, but party drugs such as cocaine or MDMA were used less often.

The Global Drug Survey is the world's most comprehensive study of drugs, their use, distribution in society and their consequences.
