Much of the comic content that we have found for years on Twitter or Instagram comes from another social network: TikTok.
As in the disappeared Vine, which was the quarry of audiovisual humor in social networks until its disappearance, in Tiktok you can edit videos without having to leave the application.
But there are many more functions to make you laugh: you can add songs, filters, effects, text, you can use the audios of other tiktokers, interact or respond to other users in video ... All this has made this application into a giant toolbox for comedy.
The humor on TikTok is just as varied as on Twitter or Instagram: there are traditional jokes, black humor, absurdity, bad jokes, puns ... but created by authors, usually much younger.
The average user profile is between 16 and 25 years old, and that is the audience to which many of the humor videos on the platform are directed.
They talk about life at home, in high school or university, about music or video games ...
Little plots for short comedies
Tiktok has been compared to Vine on many occasions, although its narrative potential is much greater.
In a report on how Tiktok comic videos ended up becoming popular on Twitter, the ex-viner –and now tiktoker– Darío Eme Hache explained to

that TikTok "is broader, there are more things and possibilities. On Vine, having only six seconds ended up limiting you. "
The Chinese social network allows up to one minute, which has allowed not only to tell longer stories, but also to include other comic elements impossible to condense in Vine's six seconds: dramatic pauses, awkward silences ... or texts that, to limit its duration, would not give time to read correctly.
And what do tiktokers count in that minute of time limit offered by the application?
Estela Ortiz, an expert in digital ethnography and responsible for the selection of tiktoks for the PUBER exhibition in Barcelona, explained to

that young people "talk about their vulnerabilities and insecurities, but not in a victimizing way, but naturalizing them, making irony, with a very intelligent humor, with many layers ".

Filters and effects for surreal humor
Faced with that humor close to the everyday, in Tiktok we also find the opposite extreme: that of the absurd.

This type of comedy uses surprising auctions (videos that end unexpectedly) or surreal situations, many of them recreated with the help of another of the platform's tools: filters.
Thanks, for example, to the green screen (which allows replacing the background of a video with an image selected by the user), tiktokers can place the action of their videos anywhere: a medieval castle, a cemetery, the border with Morocco ... or the sky itself.

In 2018 Tiktok bought and absorbed Musical.ly, a social network similar to Tiktok with a strong presence of music: from it comes the duet tool, the lipsync trend ... Tiktok also has a large presence of musical content, even humorous.
They range from using songs out of context - as in the video above this paragraph, in which they sing Bad Gyal at a funeral - to choreographing anything.
