THE FIGARO ARCHIVES - In 1896, Émile Zola proclaimed his love of animals in our columns. Discover his resounding plea.


A declaration of love for animals.

To declare his love for animals, Émile Zola chooses

Le Figaro

: "One day I miss any topical subject, I decide to write my article in

Le Figaro

on the love of animals" he indicates, two months later late in our columns.

Zola fears besides not to interest, "to write there one of these neutral articles".

What astonishment.

This plea earned him a large number of letters of sympathy: "More than two hundred letters have reached me and not only from France but from all the countries of the world."

He says that since his collaboration with

Le Figaro

, this is the first time that one of his articles has aroused so much passion.

We are in 1896, two years before the publication of the famous "J'accuse".
