Covid-19: “very tight confinement” cannot be ruled out, according to Gabriel Attal

Between two glimmers of hope, the prospect of a new confinement is becoming increasingly clear.

According to government spokesman Gabriel Attal, who spoke on Wednesday after the Council of Ministers, the curfew at 6 p.m. "does not sufficiently slow down" the Covid-19 virus.

Obviously, the rules will have to be tightened to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

To do this, "different scenarios" are being studied, says the minister, including "very tight confinement".

"We are considering several scenarios which range from maintaining the current framework with the curfew at 6 p.m. to very tight confinement", specifies Gabriel Attal at the end of the Council of Ministers, which opened after a health defense council at the Elysee.

But is maintaining the 6pm curfew and not changing anything a viable solution?

If the track is considered, the Minister considers "at this stage unlikely" that it is preferred.

The curfew has, according to him, "a relative effectiveness, which is real but which is not sufficient".

It "slows down the progression of the virus", but the Covid-19 "continues to progress" while "the variants are developing at a significant rate".

President Emmanuel Macron asked for “additional analyzes” on these different scenarios before making decisions, specifies Gabriel Attal.

These analyzes are accompanied by an unstoppable observation: the epidemic has reached "a high plateau", with "an incidence which increases and pressure on the hospital which increases".

The spokesperson also recognizes "a weariness among many French people" and "among our caregivers" in the face of the health crisis.

The time is therefore for mental preparation, while waiting for the government to decide on the scenarios still relevant.

They will be the subject of "consultation with Parliament and the unions" in the coming days, promises Gabriel Attal.
