(ANSA) - ROME, JANUARY 27 - "On January 27, 1945 the gates of Auschwitz were opened, revealing to the world the horror of the Nazi genocide. This date was then chosen to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust, to remember the Shoah, the laws racial persecution of Jewish citizens, Italians who have suffered deportation, imprisonment, death. The Day of Remembrance is an opportunity to reflect, to remember how hatred, in all its forms and in every historical context, it is always the cause of a criminal progression capable of reaching aberrant outcomes: the passage from prejudice to the annihilation of the other is faster than one can imagine ".

This was stated by the president of the Chamber Roberto Fico on the occasion of the Memorial Day.

"This awareness - he continues - must help us to keep always high attention against intolerance, indifference, ignorance and oblivion which, even today, risk fueling new horrors and new atrocities. The Italian and European institutions must be constantly engaged in this exercise of remembrance and civil responsibility by promoting all the tools useful to combat all forms of integralism, prejudice and intolerance and to defend a society founded on respect for the dignity of every human being ".
