Orléans goes upmarket in packaging recycling

By the end of 2022, all French people will have to recycle all of their packaging.

In Orléans (Loiret), this will be the case from February 1 of this year.

In their yellow trash, the inhabitants of the 22 municipalities of the metropolis will no longer be content to throw away paper, cans, tins and plastic bottles.

They will now be able to recycle all other plastic packaging, yoghurt pots, trays, sachets, as well as aluminum foil, coffee capsules, etc., as much waste that went to the green garbage bin to be incinerated.

“You never knew if a particular package was going for recycling or not and there were a lot of mistakes.

Now it's over, we simplify the sorting process.

All packaging must be recycled, ”summarizes Mickaël Poirier, regional manager for the west at Citeo, a company with a mission responsible for sorting and recycling.

Optical sorters and a robot

To take this step forward, the city has had to thoroughly modernize its sorting center, managed by Veolia, which employs 80 people.

Fourteen million euros have been invested in the equipment which is entering the break-in period.

Much more automated, the new sorting center operates with optical sorters and a robot, and its capacity has been increased to 30,000 tonnes against 18,000 tonnes before the work.

Thanks to this change, Orléans, which was in the lower average of large cities for recycling, should significantly improve its performance in selective sorting.

"We hope to collect 6 kg of additional packaging per year and per inhabitant, or 50 kg," says Thibaut Pain, director of waste management in the metropolis.
