(ANSA) - ROME, JANUARY 27 - A 60-meter mural dedicated to 14 great women, from Nina Simone to Rosa Parks, was saved in Madrid thanks to an intervention by the residents and municipal councils after the far-right party Vox had proposed it elimination with the support of the PP and Ciudadanos.
El Pais reports it.
Decorated with the slogan: "Your skill does not depend on your gender", it was commissioned by the municipal council in the Ciudad Lineal district and painted on the wall of a sports center in 2018.
On Thursday, Vox filed a motion to remove the mural claiming it contains a "political message" where it should be dedicated to sport.
The motion was supported by the PP and Ciudadanos and so the council decided to replace it with a mural in honor of the Paralympic athletes, men and women.
The decision infuriated residents who took to the streets on Sunday and launched an online campaign that collected over 50,000 signatures in hours.
Yesterday Mas presented an urgent motion to the city council asking for the protection of the mural, passed thanks to the support of the Socialist Party.
The deputy mayor of the Spanish capital, BegoñaVillacís, admitted she was not "a huge fan of the opera" but wanted to respect the wishes of the citizens.
