A 30-year-old man was shot dead during clashes that erupted Wednesday night in Tripoli, northern Lebanon.
For the third evening in a row, protesters expressed their dissatisfaction with the new strict containment measures in the country.
Tensions began in the afternoon when protesters threw stones and molotov cocktails at the police who responded with tear gas.
Some demonstrators tried to enter the Seraglio, the seat of the northern governorate, while others gathered in al-Nour Square, a symbolic place of the demonstrations that Lebanon experienced in the fall of 2019.
For several months, the country has been plagued by a political and economic crisis and mass unemployment.
According to the national news agency, 226 people were injured yesterday and 66 people were hospitalized.
On Twitter, police reported nine injured in their ranks, including an officer in serious condition.
The Lebanese authorities have extended until February 8 a confinement initially decreed until January 25.
The country, of six million inhabitants, has so far recorded more than 2,400 deaths linked to Covid-19.
These demonstrations in Lebanon are part of a broader framework of opposition to health measures deemed too restrictive in several countries.
