During a routine traffic control on the A20, police officers landed a chance hit in the evening.
They discovered a 28-year-old who had not returned to the Neustrelitz prison after an exit.
The police only found out who it was after a chase.
The driver put up considerable resistance prior to his arrest, according to police.
When he got control of the "Quellental" parking lot, he ignored stop signals and drove away on the autobahn.
The officers took up the chase, but could only stop the fugitive between the departures Rostock-Nord and Überseehafen.
The man had previously collided with another patrol car and two policemen were slightly injured.
As it turned out, the 28-year-old had not returned to the prison after an approved exit on January 21.
His illegally extended prison term could have further consequences for the man: he was traveling in a disused vehicle with stolen license plates and did not have a driving license.
A drug pretest was also positive, so there was a suspicion that the man was under the influence of narcotics.
Investigations are now being carried out on suspicion of dangerous interference with road traffic, of endangering road traffic and of suspicion of a prohibited car race.
The police did not disclose the man's previous reason for detention.
