After heavy criticism in the social networks, the WDR has apologized for its talk show "The Last Instance" on the subject of racism.
In a statement published on Twitter, the broadcaster said: “The program did not go as we planned and imagined.
In DLI, controversial topics should be discussed in an entertaining way, and every guest is allowed to express his or her opinion.
But in retrospect, it is clear to us: With such a sensitive topic, people who bring different perspectives and / or are directly affected should have taken part in the discussion.
We learn from it and will do better. "
In the late-night talk, presenter Micky Beisenherz, entertainer Thomas Gottschalk, actress Janine Kunze and pop singer Jürgen Milski together with show host Steffen Hallaschka discussed questions such as: "Can you still say gypsy sauce?" any personal experience of racism about whether terms are racist or not and in most cases came to the conclusion: no.
SPD politician Sawsan Chebli sharply criticized the broadcast on Twitter.
She complained (like many other users) that not a single person who was actually affected by racism had been invited to the show.
The SPD chairwoman Saskia Esken also condemned the broadcast in a statement:
Thomas Gottschalk reports on his experience at a costume party in Los Angeles, where he dressed up as Jimi Hendrix.
He found out how one feels as the only black person in a group of white people, said Gottschalk.
"Blackfacing" is what it means when white people dress up as black people.
The practice is found hurtful by many black people.
