The actress was originally not supposed to play this role at all.

After shooting the pilot episode, however, she turned her back on
"Game of Thrones"
.
In an interview with
Entertainment Weekly
she revealed the reasons for her exit.
She reported unpleasant experiences during the filming.

After the episode was completed,
HBO
started filming all over again, this time with
Emilia Clarke
as the mother of dragons.
So far, one can only speculate why the role was newly filled.
Merchant revealed the real reasons in the interview.
According to her,
HBO
did not purposely replace her.
Instead, she made the decision herself not to impersonate Daenerys: “The experiences on the set of '
Game of Thrones
' were a confirmation for me to trust my instincts and to follow them.
I tried to get out of this situation and during the contract negotiations I actually decided not to take on the role.
However, I was persuaded by some people to do it. "
Merchant goes on to say that it never felt that the "story was interesting enough to tell".
She didn't want to force herself to get excited about the plot and the character just because other people were intrigued.
Nonetheless, she was impressed by Emilia Clarke's performance: “I think all of this is proof of how wonderfully

has managed to make Daenerys an icon.
She obviously had a passion for telling this story, and therefore she was amazing and great as the mother of dragons.
But as far as I am concerned, I just didn't have the right feeling to tell this story. ”She is also not jealous of Clarke's success.
On the contrary: she even fears that she could never have been the creative person she is today if she had accepted the role.

The pilot episode of
"Game of Thrones"
was never released.
Even so, there are some details about the plot that differ slightly from what happened in the first episode.
The wedding scenes with
Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa) should
originally have been much slippery.
Merchant mentions that I didn't feel at all comfortable with it: "Suddenly I was without clothes on a horse with which I was riding through Morocco. The horse seemed to have been much more euphoric than me."
