Corona plague could harm the heart health of masses of people around the world, according to a new study that warns that COVID-19 could cause a wave of cardiovascular problems in the coming years.

Researchers are concerned not only about the way the virus affects the heart, but also about the effects of prolonged closures and social remoteness on the overall health of many.

Cardiovascular disease killed nearly 18.6 million people worldwide in 2019 - an increase of over 17 percent over the previous decade.

This trend is expected to continue regardless of the corona plague, and researchers suspect that COVID-19 may exacerbate the situation even further.

The new study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, predicts that the global burden of cardiovascular disease will increase exponentially over the next few years as a direct and indirect result of corona.

Previous studies have shown that COVID-19 affects not only the lungs but also the kidneys, intestines, brain, skin and heart.

A significant number of COVID-19 patients experience heart damage, with some studies indicating that up to half of the corona patients who were hospitalized and underwent a heart scan showed signs of abnormal heart function.

It is still not entirely clear how the virus affects the heart, but it is known that a viral infection can cause significant inflammation in the body, which can damage the heart.

Another possible explanation for heart damage is that COVID-19 reduces lung function and puts a strain on the heart as a result - which can lead to heart attacks.

Another reason stems from the fact that the virus can also invade the blood vessels or cause inflammation within them, leading to blood clots that can be fatal in case one of them reaches the heart or lungs.

This period harms our heart, not just because of the virus.

But as mentioned, the virus itself and its effect on the body are only part of the story.

Researchers are also concerned about many people who delay treatment or diagnosis of cardiovascular conditions because they want to avoid hospitals.

They are also concerned about flooded health systems due to the corona not providing good enough care for heart patients.

"COVID-19 has taken a huge toll on human life around the world and is on track to be one of the top 3 to 5 causes of death in 2020. But it will also affect - directly and indirectly - the incidence of cardiovascular disease and deaths in the coming years," Said in a statement from the study's author, Dr. Salim S. Virani, an expert in cardiology and cardiovascular research.

The prolonged closures and social distance measures that have accompanied us over the past year have also affected the heart health of many. Our lives, including adopting unhealthy behaviors that are known to increase the risk of heart disease and stroke, "Dr. Virani explained," unhealthy eating habits, increased alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, the mental cost of isolation and even fear of contracting the virus, all of these can Adversely affect a person's risk of suffering from heart disease.

Dangerous combination.

Heart disease is not the only long-term global health problem that experts are concerned about.

Last month it was reported that researchers fear that the corona plague could also lead to a wave of cognitive decline, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in the coming years.

Here, too, some researchers fear the effect of the virus itself on the brain, others fear the effect of social distance and isolation on cognition, and some fear the dangerous combination between the two.
