Still deprived of evening outings, pandemic obliges, the French remained very fond of television in January, and especially current events, the news channels recording, with TF1, the strongest increases of audience over a year, of after the data published Monday by Médiamétrie.
The overall television viewing time, which takes into account viewing on all screens (phone, computer, etc.), catching up and away from home, was 4:06 in January, i.e. 13 minutes more than 'one year earlier.

On the first step of the podium with 19.9% audience share (PDA), TF1 had its best month of January since 2016, gaining 1.1 points compared to January 2019. Note, for its first month in Controllers of the 1:00 pm newscast, Marie-Sophie Lacarrau surpassed her predecessor Jean-Pierre Pernaut: her newspaper attracted an average of 5.9 million viewers per day for 42% of PDAs, a "
record for a month of January since 2014
" , depending on the channel.
In the general classification, France 2 unsurprisingly retains its second place with a PDA of 14.2% (-0.1 point) ahead of France 3 (+0.1 point to 9.2%).
At the foot of the podium, M6 gained 0.1 point to 8.9% ahead of France 5, stable at 3.6%.
Chaining records, BFMTV (+1 point to 3.2%) and Arte (+0.4 point, to 3.2%, a record since 2005) share 6th position, ahead of TMC, still at 3%.

The appetite of the French for information, reinforced with the health crisis, did not weaken in January, a month also marked by the occupation of the Capitol in the United States by supporters of former President Donald Trump and by the inauguration of his successor Joe Biden.
Second news channel, Cnews thus gained 1.1 points, setting a new record at 1.9%, ahead of LCI (+0.3 to 1.3%) and franceinfo (+0.3 to 0.8% ).
Among the other channels, Canal + posted a PDA of 1.2%, down 0.1 point.
C8, down 0.2 point to 2.7%, continues to lose ground against TMC (stable at 3%), and is trapped by W9 (stable at 2.6%).
RMC Découverte was down 0.5 point to 2%.
France 4, whose shutdown was postponed for a year last summer, recorded a decline of 0.7 point to 0.9%.
