In Berlin, the residents of 18 houses had to leave their apartments in freezing temperatures after an adjacent excavation pit was full of water.

As a result, cracks had formed in a building in the Köpenick district, and windows could no longer be opened, as a police spokesman said.

For security reasons, because of the incident on Sunday evening, people in the surrounding buildings were asked to vacate their apartments.

A total of 300 apartments were affected.

How many people lived there was initially unclear.

According to their own statements, the police expected that all those affected could be accommodated in nearby hotels by Monday morning.

The Technical Relief Organization (THW) began late on Sunday evening to support the building at risk of collapse next to the water pit.
