Five days in March for the industry and eleven days in June for the public: the Berlinale has announced details of its 71st edition. This time, six former winners will decide on the prizes.

It should have started in ten days, the 71st Berlinale.

But since December last year it has been clear that there will be no regular film festival in the capital, neither in February nor when.

What the alternative would look like under pandemic conditions was and is only partially information.

It was previously known that a so-called Industry Event was planned from March 1st to 5th.

During this period, the European Film Market (EFM) will be carried out digitally and the jury will review the competition and decide on the award of the bears.

In June, the award-winning films will be shown to a broader audience in Berlin cinemas.

The latest details now include: how the jury is made up and when exactly the audience part of the two-part Berlinale is due.

The management duo of the Berlinale, managing director Mariette Rissenbeek and artistic director Carlo Chatrian, as well as state minister for culture Monika Grütters shared this news in an online press conference.

Accordingly, six winners of the Golden Bear will decide who will receive the prizes in 2021.

These include Mohammad Rasoulof (“There is no evil”, 2020), Nadav Lapid (“Synonymes”, 2019), Adina Pintilie (“Touch Me Not”, 2018), Ildikó Enyedi (“Body and Soul”, 2017) and Gianfranco Rosi (“Fire At Sea”, 2016) and Jasmila Žbanić, who won in 2006 with “Grbavica”.

The jury should not have a president this year in order to avoid creating hierarchies between the bear winners.

»Breaking the big lance for the cinema«

The summer event is now scheduled for June 9th to 20th.

Over 80 films will then be shown in Berlin cinemas and open air.

"With the Summer Special we want to create the longed-for festival atmosphere for the audience," said Rissenbeek.

Films from all Berlinale sections will therefore be shown at around ten venues in Berlin, and the 71st Berlinale awards ceremony will also take place.

One wants to break a "big lance for the cinema", so Rissenbeek about the plans.

With which films this should be done, Chatrian, responsible for the film selection, was still covered.

The first titles should not be announced for a week, and the entire selection, including the competition, should be published by February 11th.

Above all, Chatrian commented on the jurors: "They not only embody different approaches to creating uncompromising films, but also represent part of the Berlinale history."

According to current plans, the filmmakers should view the competition entries together in a Berlin cinema at the beginning of March.

Only Mohammad Rasoulof will see the films in his home theater at home in Tehran.

Since he is under house arrest in Iran, he will definitely not be able to travel to Berlin.

Minister of State for Culture Grütters said that a cancellation under the given circumstances might have been the easiest.

However, the film market is indispensable for the industry as the »film-political start of the year«, which is why the decision was made to go digital.

The proportions of the budget, which in regular years made up sponsorship money and income from ticket sales, will balance her house as well as possible, Grütters continued.

So far, the federal government has contributed a third of the Berlinale budget.
