Melting snow and heavy rains caused flooding on the Greek-Turkish border, and a man drowned. An earthquake in the Aegean Sea, however, apparently had no consequences.

Two natural events within one day put the disaster relief agencies in Greece on alert: In the north of the country, snowmelt and heavy rains have flooded large parts of the Greek border region with Turkey since Sunday.

In addition, several earthquakes shook the east of the Aegean.

During the floods, as reported by the station Skai, among others, the border river Evros (Turkish: Meric) overflowed its banks in several places.

It flooded villages and agricultural areas.

According to the station ERT, a firefighter was killed during a rescue operation near the city of Alexandroupolis.

The masses of water had swept the man's car with them, who then drowned.

He had reportedly participated in a large-scale rescue operation in which 21 children were rescued from the roof of a kindergarten.

In the past few days it had rained heavily in the north of the country and snowed heavily in the mountain regions.

Even more water from the north is expected in the next few days.

Earthquake in the Aegean Sea apparently without consequences

The earthquakes in the Aegean, however, apparently did not cause any major damage.

According to the geodynamic institute, the earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.5, 4.8 and 4.9 occurred in the Greek capital Athens between 7.45 a.m. and 8 a.m.

There had been several smaller quakes beforehand.

The center of the quake was therefore between the islands of Lesbos and Chios.

They occurred at a depth between 12 and 15 kilometers below the sea floor.

A much stronger quake in the region in October resulted in hundreds of deaths in Turkey and a small tsunami that also caused damage on the Greek islands.
