January 2020 recorded the maximum monthly production (492.269 wheels) of the last 5 years.
These are the data disseminated by the Protection Consortium, which is based in Novara.
At the regional level, over two thirds of production (3,616,765 wheels) are concentrated in Piedmont, the remainder in the Lombardy provinces.
11.3% of the total was allocated to the production of Spicy Gorgonzola (576,877 wheels).
Also in 2020, the forms destined for export, 85% to EU countries, were 1 million 603 thousand, +2.85 compared to the same period of the previous year.
Germany is the first importer, with 486,446 wheels, followed by Germany.
Abrupt drop in UK quotas, -21.26%, "largely attributable - claims the Consortium - to Brexit policies".
"It was not so obvious, in the year marked by the outbreak of the Covid pandemic, - comments the president of the Gorgonzola Consortium, Antonio Auricchio - to be able to maintain the positive sign in production and exports. Although with smaller increases, the production of Gorgonzola Dop remained well above the 5 million wheel shape ceiling, reached for the first time in 2019, confirming the constantly growing trend of the last 12 years ".
"We should applaud - concludes Auricchio - all 39 member companies and about 1800 farms that have ensured the production of an Italian excellence such as Gorgonzola, despite operating in difficult conditions".
