Lower back pain - many think of the intervertebral disc.

But behind the symptoms is often an irritated sciatic nerve - which is treated as follows.

  • There are many causes behind back problems.

  • The sciatic nerve is often responsible for lower back pain that radiates into the leg.

In the case of extreme back pain that radiates into the leg, many first ask: Do I have a herniated disc * or lumbago?

.

This describes the spread of a pain (Algos stands for pain) in the back (lumbar) and in the leg (sciatica means something like "along the sciatic nerve").

Sciatic pain is one of the most common back and leg problems caused by an irritated sciatic nerve.

This occurs at the level of the pelvis towards the leg.

The following symptoms are typical of ischalgia

  • Sudden pain in the lumbar spine that can radiate from the lumbar vertebrae to the buttocks and down to the thighs, knees, calves or even toes.

  • Often only one side of the body is affected by the severe pain.

  • The affected part of the body is sensitive to pressure and the skin can feel numb.

  • Feet or toes can feel paralyzed.

  • Stretching out your legs, coughing or sneezing usually makes the symptoms worse.

Muscle tension as a common cause behind sciatica pain

The possible causes behind sciatica symptoms include:

  • Muscle tension in the area of the sciatic nerve, which leads to irritation or inflammation of the nerve

: "Functional disorders of the locomotor system usually result from poorly trained muscles *, deficits in coordination or increased permanent tension in the muscles, e.g. through constant stress or a lack of relaxation ability Sciatica can also be caused by nerve irritation from a tense muscle ", informs the Hamburg Back Center.

  • Also a

    disc lesion

    can affect the sciatic nerve.

In this case, in addition to the pain, there are also deficits such as numbness.

  • Bruises or pressure

on nerve roots in the spine are also possible causes.

Only an orthopedic surgeon can determine whether there is harmless tension, a herniated disc or sciatica behind back pain.

If you suffer from the latter, there are a number of therapy options.
