What time of day is best to do exercise is a question that quite a few beginner athletes ask.

It can be said with almost certainty that most people tend to believe that morning workouts are the best way to stay fit, and quite a few studies back them up.

New research claims otherwise.

A study by Professor Patrick Schreiwan of the Faculty of Nutrition and Movement Studies at Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands found that when you exercise, the time you do it is almost as important as the activity itself, and that afternoon exercise may have more health benefits than blood training.

The study, although limited in scope, but manages to confirm previous studies that indicate that training at different times of the day has different benefits and that your training schedule should take into account what you want to get from your training.

The study examined the metabolic health of men at risk of developing type 2 diabetes and found that scheduling their exercise could be key to maximizing its health benefits and stabilizing blood sugar levels.

Past studies have already shown that mornings are the best time to exercise if the goal is to sleep better, have a calmer day, lower blood pressure or lose weight.

Other studies have found that afternoon exercise may lead to better strength and endurance and may be better for people who tend to sleep late.

Evening workouts have their own benefits - they can help relieve stress, process the past day and achieve better quality sleep.

It all depends on what you want to achieve from the training.

The researchers examined the role of exercise in men at risk for type 2 diabetes and at risk.

They brought data from a previous experiment in which men were asked to ride stationary bikes three times a week for 12 weeks, and they were asked to record their training times.

Using these data, the researchers found that the men who exercised early in the day, between the hours of 08: 00-10: 00, experienced fewer health benefits than those who used the stationary bicycle between the hours of 18: 15-00: 00, even though they did fairly identical exercises.

People who exercised in the afternoon experienced more fat loss, enjoyed greater blood sugar control and better insulin sensitivity compared to morning riders.

"I believe that exercising is better than not exercising, regardless of scheduling," Professor Shrivan said.

"However," he added, "this study does suggest that afternoon exercise may be more beneficial."

He explained that exercise later in the day may "help in a faster metabolism of people's last meals," whether held in the afternoon or at night.
