On December 27th

the first citizen in Germany is to be vaccinated against Corona.

The vaccine is considered safe for adults.

The following recommendations are made for children.

  • If the vaccine from Biontech and Pfizer is approved in the EU in the next few days, the first people in Germany should be vaccinated against corona from December 27th.

  • The first will be over 80s.

Residents of nursing homes, employees in nursing homes and employees in the rescue service also belong to the first vaccination group.

Gradually, other occupational and age groups should also be vaccinated - the higher the risk of suffering a severe disease course * and the higher the risk of infection, the earlier someone's turn will come.

  • But what about children?

Should / can you have your child vaccinated against corona?

The answer in advance: Children cannot be vaccinated against Corona.

On the website of the Robert Koch Institute it says: "Initially, the vaccines are only available for adults, as they have not yet been sufficiently tested for effectiveness and safety in children and adolescents".

With the aim of stopping the corona pandemic as quickly as possible, vaccine development projects were launched worldwide in record time.

While it can normally take more than a decade for a vaccine to be ready for the market, everything went very quickly in the case of vaccine development against the pathogen Sars-CoV-2.

Vaccines are only tested on humans after animal experiments - for ethical reasons first on adults and only on children if no serious side effects have occurred in adults, as the RKI informs.

Until there is a corona vaccine for children, studies on safety and effectiveness would have to be carried out.

And another factor also plays an important role why the corona vaccination is currently not a priority for children: "According to all that is known so far, daycare and elementary school children do not seem to drive the infection process in a special way and are

less often and severely ill than Adults

”, according to the RKI.

Corona vaccination only from 16: What about chronically ill children?

At least for Biontech's vaccine it is known

that it can only be vaccinated from the age of 16

, as the Pharmazeutische Zeitung (PZ) informs.

Accordingly, children and teenagers up to the age of 16 are not considered in the current proposal of the Standing Vaccination Commission, which provides for a fixed vaccination sequence divided into six categories.

There are currently no recommendations for parents with chronically ill children.

The draft resolution of the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) only states for its recommendations on Covid-19 vaccination: "In younger age groups, especially children and adolescents, severe courses are less common and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infections are more common".

However, the closest contact persons of chronically ill children should be vaccinated against Covid-19

, reports the PZ.
